  • Notes
    • John arrived in Charlestown, Massachusetts, aboard the ship "James" in 1635, with the family of Thomas Ewer. Thomas died in 1638 and his widow, Sarah Larned Ewer, married Thomas Lothrop and moved to Barnstable. The young John Scudder accompanied her there.

Barnstable county consists of fifteen coastal towns located on the Cape Cod peninsula. Bordered on the north by Cape Cod Bay, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south by Nantucket Sound, it is the easternmost point of land in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. With over 550 miles of shoreline and more than 360 lakes and ponds, the maritime heritage of the region is deeply rooted. Barnstable county was formed on 2 June 1685 when Plymouth Colony was divided into three counties. The county seat is the Town of Barnstable. Bristol and Plymouth counties were also named after their county seats.

The early writers compared the countryside to English parks. A Mr. Graves wrote from Salem in 1629 that the country was "very beautiful in open lands mixed with goodly woods, and again open plains, in some places 500 acres, some more some less, not much troublesome to clear for the plow. The grass and weeds grow up to a man's face; in the lowlands and by fresh rivers abundance of grass, and large meadows without any tree or shrub."
