  • Notes
    • In 1820 Matthias removed with his father to Cincinnati, from thence to Indian Creek, Butler County, Ohio, and then to Dayton. From Dayton, when quite young, he, with his brother Caleb went to Indianapolis. The latter remained there, and died a few years ago one of the oldest residents of that city, leaving a large family behind.

On Christmas Day, 1827, Matthias came to Lafayette, and resided here ever since. He brought his lot of cabinet maker's tools with him on his back, making the distance on foot. He was the first cabinet maker that ever opened shop in this region, and some of his work, hand made, of course, is still in use in the city, nearly as good as new. His first purchase of real estate was lots No. 15 and 16, old town plat, corner of Main and Fifth Streets, where he first "carried on shop," and built a residence. As times changed and he increased in wealth, these buildings were changed, until now upon this spot stand some of the best in the city. Upon these lots he resided during his lifetime in this city, with the exception of two years, when he lived where his son C.R. now lives, on North Sixth Street. He was a member of Perry Lodge F. and A. Masons.
