  • Notes
    • Maria's father, Colonel Philip Johntson, died in the battle of Long Island during the Revolutionary War. He served in Hunt's Regiment, New Jersey Militia.

While a student of college at Princeton, he had abandoned his books to serve in the French war of 1755. His bravery and success enabled him to return to his home with military reputation and honors. At the beginning of the Revolution, he was appointed by the Congress of New Jersey to the command of its first volunteer regiment; and in a few days a thousand strong arms and brave hearts were gathered around him, in readiness to march against the invading foe. Maria would have been present in his house at his final leave-taking. He was a fine-looking officer, tall and athletic, and of great physical power. He was said to have had a premonition of his fate. This impression, it was thought, added to his own, if not to the common grief of his family. He was seen in his closet in earnest prayer just before taking his departure.

In the 36th Congress, a bill was passed in March 1860 to pay to William H. Johnston, the administrator of the estate of Maria's mother, Rachel, seven years half pay for Colonel Johnston's service in the Revolution. This was for the benefit of his and Rachel's orphaned children. Of course, by then Maria had passed away.
