  • Notes
    • Richard came to New Jersey as early as 1709, the date of his deeds. His plantation, in the possession of his lineal descendants at the turn of the 20th century, was on the Delaware, near the falls known by his name, about five miles north of Trenton. He was one of the most active and influential men in the town. His name is mentioned often in public instruments, charters, etc., and heads the list of grantees to whom the land on which to build a church was conveyed by Alexander Lockart, in March, 1709.

Richard was commissioned a lieutenant in the militia in 1711, eventually rising to the grade of captain, serving in the French and Indian wars. In 1733, Richard is listed as a church deacon.

In 1715, a new family home was built to replace the first, which had burned. The mansion, the second house which still stands, remained in the hands of Richard's descendants until 1938. In June 1715, Richard purchased a 170 acre tract of land in adjoining Maidenhead (now Lawrence) Township. He later deeded this to his son Joseph.

Richard and eight of his children were baptized in the Presbyterian Church by a visiting minister from Philadelphia. Since Richard's father, John Scudder, was originally a Quaker, this seems to imply that Richard and his children remained Quakers until reaching Hunterdon.
