  • Notes
    • Carl's family moved to Pasadena in the late 1880's. His grandfather, Joseph Nash, along with Joseph's brother, started Nash Brothers Grocery Store. This eventually became the F.C. Nash Company, a department store in Pasadena.

Carl graduated from Pasadena High School in l923 and attended UCLA in 1928, belonging to Zeta Psi fraternity, Sigma Zeta chapter. His passion at that time was playing drums in his own combo, for fun and for hire.

Retirement came in l972 from the W. Ross Campbell Co., a pioneer Los Angeles mortgage banking firm. Up until a year prior to his death, Carl continued to host the summer badminton group he and Mabel started 58 years previously, at his home court, enjoying now a third generation of players. Around 300 people have participated including guests from other countries. But nothing equaled the passion and respect he held for the mountains, the Angeles National Forest and the Sierra Nevadas. Since l954, Carl had been a lifetime member of the Sierra Club. For years he was a leader, organizing base camps for two-week 'backcountry' camping in the Sierras. It all started at an early age accompanying his father on hiking trips up the Arroyo. At age 86, he organized monthly hikes in the Angeles from October through May. The group called themselves "Scudder's Ramblers," some of them Sierra Club friends. If asked the reason for his good health and longevity, he would answer, "All the years I've devoted to hiking and gardening" or "I never ate a bite of fast food."
